Today is an anniversary of the death of the president Lech Kaczinsky and his delegation in the Smolensk disaster. The polish commission officially concluded , that the plane came down as a result of an explosion. I was always convinced, that the Smolensk was a payback by Putin for Kaczinsky’s independent standing, including his trip to Tbilisi in August 2008 in support of Georgia, which was under russian attack. Kaczinsky came despite the russian threats to down his plane and kill him and other brave leaders, that flew with him. Lech came anyway and played a decisive role in saving my country’s capital and our independence. We will forever be grateful to him! In Tbilisi he and me both predicted in our speeches, that Ukraine will be the next to be attacked. Lots of europeans called us paranoid and some of them were shamefully complacent on not pushing for thorough investigation of the Smolensk tragedy. Lech was not only the last of the mohicans of old Europe, but I am deeply convinced, that he is a precursor of a new Europe, that yet has to emerge.
